i think eyes are always on washington for leadership. whether they like to would make it or not, the lack of leading from behind it becomes a problem for the region and for the united states. i think the last meeting that took place in cairo regarding syria -- the first meeting after the american elections and there was a very interesting dynamic there. the saudi arabia, united arab emirates, with europeans in the united states. the trio started to say let's think of a strategy to help the new coalition of syria. that means what services not good enough. they need tents in a very substantial way. army is now on the table. putting a bill is not the problem. the arabs will do that. no one is talking about american troops on the ground. this is one of the most important elements. why? because now in terms of how it can be taken for work with russia and china. and the question that will be asked that needs to be asked is that the strategy is needed to go to the russians and send basically -- and say now what do you want? what is it that you

he is here in washington. he was the deputy prime minister and the foreign prime minister to jordan. a wonderful guy. he said something that stayed with me. that there are too great traditions in the middle east, arab nationalism and political islam. the problem is inclusiveness and pluralism are not part of either of those traditions. that is the problem in the middle east. a sense of inclusion, of tolerance. and that is one of the problems in getting to a democratic outcome. the other one starts democracy from the bottom up, which is helping these countries to get in a tradition of greater transparency to the people, a greater accountability of the government to get issues like corruption. and greater accountability. that is, if you think about it, we think of democracy and we think separation of powers, three branches of government, house and senate. what democracy starts with its transparency, accountability, and responsiveness. those other kinds of principles we need to be encouraging in the middle east.
